Just Take A Moment

Enjoy the shadenfreude.
Those poor evangelicals. First, their proclamation that Katrina was God's punishment for all the homosexual sin in New Orleans is put down as false with hurricanes Gustav and Hanna bearing down on the gulf coast very much like God's own wrath (which, by their logic, means that God is punishing people for being Republicans). Now their vice presidential candidate announces that her seventeen year old unmarried daughter is pregnant:

John McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin, said Monday her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is five months pregnant, an announcement stealing even more thunder from McCain and a Republican presidential convention already overshadowed by
Hurricane Gustav.

The money quote sure to piss them off even more:

"Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We're proud of Bristol's ecision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents," Sarah and Todd Palin said in their brief statement.

Such a proud example for the evangelical sect. Beneath the examples of "sympathy" expressed in the linked article lies a profound reason to not go to the polls in November.

You know, Jamie, that's exactly what the Obama/Biden campaign thought when it had its backers start emailing and commenting this sort of stuff on the blogs.

What can I say, boys? I just love all this proof that gays are responsible for Katrina, and that "abstinence only" education is so damned successful!

Now Jamie, how successful has "sex-ed" been in prevnting teen pregnancy in the last 30-40 years? Not very.

Rest assured that Sara Palin's daughter was well versed in the "birds and the bees."

To quote the post I just, um, posted: abstinence works, abstinence-only education does not. As Roy Zimmerman said, abstinence-only sex education is like “just hold it” potty training.

It's avoidance, not reality.

Do you really think Palin's daughter was that clueless?

It's not sex-ed you're talking about. It's contraception-ed. Be honest and call it what it is.

I'm being perfectly honest. Comprehensive sex education would be just that--comprehensive. It would cover sexual mechanics and the repercussions of sexual relations, including resultant pregnancies. It would cover the different variants of sexual expression, and emphasize the proofs that show how human sexuality is not merely hetero, bi, or homo, but a varying range that differs with each person. It would encourage responsible sexual behavior by emphasizing the benefits of waiting until one is a mature adult able to make rational decisions and appreciate the repercussions of sexual relationships.

I think that's vastly more meaningful than a "contraception-ed" soundbyte, Patrick. Let's not be pedantic.

So, the reason teen pregnancy rates are so high is because the sex-ed we have is not adequate? We need more of it? Or maybe it just needs to be "done right?"

Have you seen her babydaddy? Answers the question pretty much right there.

So you're less concerned with the welfare of teenagers than you are with proving abstinence-only education to be "wrong"

Apples and oranges. Good lord.
